Monday 05 July 2010 - 23:45:13 Cage Rage 4 TheFightJudge was cage side for the latest Atlas Fight production, Cage Rage 4 at the IP Casino in Biloxi, MS. The show was Saturday June 19th, 2010. The doors to the venue opened promptly at 6pm and fights started just after 7pm. Concessions consisted of a full wet bar with Miller Lite being the beer sponsor of the night.
The first fight of the night was Chris Hicks vs Curtis Waite at 145lbs. Seconds after the bell Hicks lands the takedown and transitions into a guillotine. The submission wasn’t there and Hicks moved to rear mount but struggled to land both hooks. The position is lost and Chris Hicks pulls Waite into his guard. Waite moves into half guard but quickly finds himself in an arm triangle. The W goes to Chris Hicks at 1:38 of the 1st round via Arm Triangle
Fight number 2 of the night was Tyrone Brisby vs Blake Singley at 170lbs This was the best amateur fight of the night. Singley showcased beautiful boxing with both speed and finesse. And Brisby out wrestled Singley at every clinch. This was a ‘Striker’ vs ‘Wrestler’ match if I have ever seen one. Tyrone amassed takedown after takedown against Singley but every time the fighters went to their feet, Singley punished Brisby with dead-accurate punches that seemed to hurt even the crowd. The fight went this way through the first round. And resumed the same way with the second round. Until Singley (after another Brisby takedown) wall walked the cage, reversed the dominant position on the mat, and gains side control. Finally, Blake fights Brisby into an armbar. Singley takes the WIN at 2:08 in the 2nd round due to armbar
Fight number 3 of the night Tel Faulkner vs Danny Ruiz at 170lbs The fight started with both fighters trying to find their range. Ruiz then decides to take the fight to his comfort zone (the mat) with a fast takedown. He then moves to side control and rains elbows intot he left ear of Faulkner. The referee intervenes to protect Faulkner and stops the fight. Ruiz is the winner at 1:08 of the 1st round.
Fight 4 Joe Abercrombie vs Randy Webb at 135lbs Begins with Abercrombie the aggressor, he pelts Webb with a combination of strikes then pulls a takedown. Webb moves to the mount and Joe works the guard. Abercrombie finds a triangle but loses the hold. The same submission is found and worked again for an exceedingly long time. Webb then moves to Abercrombie’s back to work an armbar but the Referee stands the pair due to lack of action. On the resume, Joe lands 2 successful takedowns, moves to side control and fights Webb in the corner of the cage till the bell. Round 2 opens with Webb showing a plan change toward boxing but Joe takes him to the mat again. They stand but not for long as Joe takes Webb to the mat for the last time. This time, Abercrombie finds both hooks, pounds Webb from rear mount, locks in a rear naked choke which Webb refuses to tap from. The WIN goes to Joe Abercrombie at 2:23 of the second due to rear naked choke
Fight 5 Shawn Hayes vs Randy James at 145lbs Round 1 begins with Hayes rushing James with strikes. James takes his time to find his range while landing several brutal kicks to the body of Hayes. Hayes again rushes James with awkward combinations, near-brawl like boxing, but this time Hayes connects with James’ button. Randy James falls to the mat and the referee intervenes to stop any unnecessary damage to James as he is unable to protect himself. Hayes goes crazy at the sight of his fallen opponent, seemingly unsure whether to continue fighting, stand or to sit. The win goes to Shawn Hayes at 0:48 sec of the 1st round due to KO
Fight 6 Ryan Caprari vs Kyle Bullock at 160lbs Round one starts with Caprari in complete control. He lands a single punch, drops Bullock to the mat and proceeds to take his back. He pulls in both hooks while working the rear naked choke. Bullock fights the choke for nearly an entire round but submits by tapping. The win goes to Caprari at 3:38 of the 1st round by way of rear naked choke.
Fight 7 Wesley Little vs Justin Hallahan at 205lbs The first round begins with a series of powerful strikes by both fighters followed by a clinch. Hallahan is successful in 7 takedowns and seems in control of his opponent. The majority of strikes thrown by Hallahan connect and he pushes Little against the cage wall at will. The fighters end the round on the mount. As soon as Round 2 is about to begin, Hallahan signals to his corner man, Alan Belcher that he is injured. Belcher urges him to continue, obvious that Hallahan is winning the fight but the injury is seemingly severe and directed at the fighter’s left shoulder The win goes to Wesley Little at the end of the 1st round due to TKO (injured opponent).
Fight 8 Marcus Andrusia vs Aaron Williams Andrusia vs Williams served as the Co-Main Event of the night with Andrusia taking the fight with very little notice. The first round opens with a solid head kick from Andrusia , an exchange and a second head kick. Williams does fire back a quick combo that pushes Andrusia away for a moment but Marcus ‘The Boogeyman’ Andrusia keeps moving forward. Upon engaging again, Andrusia lands a 3rd head kick (and a 3rd knockdown for Williams), trailed by a fast 4 punch combination. There is a clinch, Marcus goes for a guillotine, then side mount which transitions to rear mount with both hooks and finishes with a solid rear naked choke. The win goes to Marcus Andrusia at 2:21 of the 1st round via rear naked choke.
Fight 9 Josh Thorpe vs Matt McCook for the “145lb Atlas Title” Round one begins with McCook living up to his nickname ‘Tsunami’ as he rushes Thorpe with a flying kick. Josh Thorpe then settles into a meticulous boxing groove that McCook is unable to defend or attack. Matt lands a head kick, which Josh counters with a forward solo plex kick to regain range. McCook lands a flying knee, a takedown and an armbar attempt. They stand, Josh head kicks, moves McCook to the fence and pounds Matt in the face yet again. McCook is successful with another takedown but ends up on his back with Thorpe in side control. From this position, Thorpe works McCook’s upper body and head, knees him repeatedly in the ribs, moves to North/South position which McCook reverses with an arm triangle that holds till the bell.
Round 2 begins just as tense as round 1 ended. Thorpe owns the stand up game between the fighters with strikes and movement that is both sharp and accurate. Again McCook rushes Thorpe with a useless front kick and Thorpe keeps boxing McCook’s head. Thorpe moves to leg kicks followed by jabs and McCook goes for another takedown. The move works, but puts Matt in a prone, facedown position. Thorpe takes half guard to full guard against the cage wall then proceeds to pound McCook’s ribs again. Matt heel spikes the back of Thorpe’s thighs while Thorpe drops elbows into McCook’s face. The two stand again Josh goes back to boxing and lands a painful abdomen kick to McCook. McCook kicks Thorpe’s right knee and tries to repeat the move but the kick lands in Thorpe’s groin. There is a quick break but at the return Matt throws a head kick which doesn’t find a home. He lands another flying knee to Josh’s face then Thorpe makes a slam of a takedown to McCook. The round ends in the North/South position with Thorpe in control again.
Round 3 begins with an eye gouge from McCook then a break. On the return, Thorpe goes for a leg kick but connects with McCook’s groin and the fighter is given his own break. When action finally continues Matt kicks Thorpe in the same right leg which seems to be causing pain. Thorpe hip tosses McCook but doesn’t follow him to the canvas. McCook keeps after the right leg of Thorpe and Josh keeps boxing. There is a takedown, they stand and box, a clinch with Josh in control. Thorpe gains another takedown and ground and pounds McCook. Matt is able to execute a backdoor escape. They stand and exchange again. Thorpe makes the final takedown of the match and throws one heavy elbow after another into McCook’s face. At this point both fighters are covered in blood, McCook’s blood, from a large gash opened on the fighter’s nose. The win goes to Josh Thorpe by way of unanimous decision. *We are then informed that McCook’s belt (145lb Atlas champ) was never in danger of being lost to Thorpe. A real surprise to all the fans. Thorpe failed to make weight before the fight, showing 148lbs on the scale instead of the contractually agreed 145lbs. An official rematch has been agreed to by both fighters for August 14th at Cage Rage 5.

The Atlas Fights group have established themselves as the best professional MMA show on the Gulf Coast. The fighters from Port City MMA represented the gym with class and skill on the card. First up was Blake Singley to fight a really tough striker from Florida. Despite Blake's opponent having a ton of experience he wanted nothing to do with Blake on the feet. Blake defended well from the bottom and had a couple or really nice reversals. In the second round Blake locked up an armbar and showed a lot of skill on the ground with the finish.
Josh Thorpe was the main event of the night against the champion Matt McCook from Miami. Josh dominated the action throught the fight on route to a unanimous decision victory. Josh won every round on every scorecard. The fight sets up a rematch for the Atlas FIghts Featherweight title on August 14 at the IP Casino! Don't miss this highly anticipated rematch!
Colin McKee's fight was cancelled at the last minute when the comission discovered that his opponent David Hullet from Extreme Couture in Las Vegas was actually suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Comission. This is terrible for Colin who trained & dieted very had for this number 1 contenders matchup. Colin does pick up the number 1 contender status and will fight for the Atlas Fights Welterweight Title at the August 14 show. | | Colin "The Gift" McKee Sunday 20 June 2010 - 23:39:19 Colin 'The Gift' Mckee  Last year, (2009) I had the opportunity to meet a very unique fighter, Colin Mckee. Unique in a very pleasant way, Colin possesses qualities which are becoming quite rare among those in his chosen career. By his demeanor; always friendly, never boastful, and never self-absorbed, I wouldn’t have guessed him to be a professional fighter. Let alone a professional MMA fighter with an impressive, upward record. Colin Mckee hails from Belfast, Ireland. Born and raised. He is from a working class family, his mother is a nurse and his father a builder by trade. By this life, Colin was shown the virtues of hard, honest work from an early age. And it was his Father, with an interest for traditional boxing that first introduced Colin to pugilistic sports.
“My Father was a judge for local boxing shows. He had friends and such in that circle and that is how I got started (in boxing).” Stated Mckee. At age 8, Colin’s Father enrolled his son in a local boxing gym. It was small, poorly funded, and lacked any big or famous names that either taught or trained there. Although lacking the pedigree of other gyms in the area, it did serve as a stepping stone for Colin and spurred an interest in fighting. After attending for nearly two years, Colin switched focus, desiring to learn a more traditional martial art. Tae Kwon Do was to be the next stop for Colin and again he trained diligently for two years. Although he admittedly never developed a true love for TKD, Colin persisted in his education. Around the time Colin turned 15, a new craze was sweeping the internet in Ireland. It was 1999 and the biggest MMA promotion company in the world, The UFC, was flexing its muscles. Even though the UFC wasn’t broadcast on Irish Television, it was available as streaming video. Video that caught Colin’s eye. Some famous names were listed by Colin; Ken Shamrock, Tank Abbott, Tito Ortiz, and their fighting exploits lit a fire under young Colin Mckee. A night out with friends in Belfast created a chance encounter that would change Colin’s life. A man named Andrew Burrows, a bouncer at a local club, overheard the boys talking about seeing internet video of the UFC. Burrows introduced himself and recommended they try visiting a local gym that taught MMA, Chumsut Gym.
 Colin wasted no time and that very week he was enrolled at Chumsut. Taking to the structured environment almost immediately, Colin felt he was finding his place. He trained hard and at the age of 18 began taking his first amateur fights. After two fights and two wins, Mckee was on a roll. With merely one week notice, he accepted his first professional MMA fight. The event was held in Ede Holland and Colin faced Oktay Karatas, a well known Turkish kick boxer, at 185lbs. Colin’s first professional fight went to the final bell, handing Mckee his first loss, albeit by split decision. This first outing Colin that he had the ability to match a professional MMA fighter and go the distance. Colin took the defeat as a learning experience and trained harder. His regime consisted of a strict 4 hour a day program for 5 days a week. His friend and manager from Chumsut Gym, Patrick ‘Paddy’ Mooney placed Colin into more professional bouts to gain experience for the budding fighter. It was then that Colin had earned his place fighting on the card of the widely popular European MMA Promotion company, Cage Wars. Roemer Trumpert was to be Colin’s first opponent at Cage Wars in April 2007. Again the fight went to the final bell,. Again, Colin was handed a loss by decision. “After the fight with Roemer, I knew I had to ‘get’ Jiu-Jitsu.” Stated Colin. Gracie Barra became his new home gym with a heavy emphasis on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After a rigorous 6 month education in BJJ under Graham Keyes (a BJJ Brown Belt under Mauricio Gomes) Colin was ready to take his next fight at Cage Wars in October 2007. This time Colin was set to face American fighter James Orso of Port City MMA in Mobile Alabama. Port City MMA is owned by Jimmy ‘Cornbread’ Mills, a middleweight fighter with a strong record both in America and in Europe. Colin secures the Orso fight with a win by TKO in the 2nd round by strikes. Although the opposition to one of his fighters, Colin begins a friendship Jimmy Mills who has become a fighter for Cage Wars himself. And in May of 2008, Jimmy helps Colin to his first fight in the USA, at XTC 4. Colin dominates his opponent and local favorite, Todd Literman with a 1st round standing guillotine choke. After a short lived celebration, Colin returns to Ireland and to his training. He fights again for Cage Wars in March of 2009 with a win over Arunas Klicius in the 1st round due to strikes. Colin maintains his winning record in the USA with an entrance into a local venue and into the NLE (No Love Entertainment) series, produced by UFC Veteran Rich Clementi. Three fights, three victories in just five months time. Colin stayed in the US during this period and trained at Port City MMA under the direction of Jimmy Mills and the training paid dividends for Mckee. After the third fight of his trip, he returned home to Ireland and to Cage Wars, finding another win on November 29th 2009, merely 22 days after his last victory in the US. That was six consecutive wins, all in the first round for Mckee.
In 2010 Mckee returned to the USA. February 6th he faced James ‘Razor’ Sharp from Remix MMA, owned by UFC Veteran Alan ‘The Talent Belcher. The fight goes to the third round but Colin secures the win by submission at the 57sec mark. Colin considers Port City a “Proper MMA gym that is well rounded” He also had nothing but good things to say for Jimmy ‘Cornbread’ Mills, including “Jimmy is an excellent coach and friend.” Attempting to ‘set down roots’ here in the US, Colin now has an apartment in a quiet area just minutes from his training. He has a girlfriend here in the United States as well. Life consists of “Training, training and spending time with my friends.” Says Colin. Lyle Henley pushes Colin through his strength and conditioning program at The Athlete Factory. Johnny Smith of Smith Boxing handles Colin’s hands and Jimmy Mills is his coach in all other training aspects.
In closing I asked Mckee to sum up his current place in fighting and in life. He left me with this, “In America, I find the atmosphere to be the best part. As far as fighting goes, I know what works for me. Most importantly, I know what I need to work on. Long-term, I’m going to stay in this (fighting) for awhile. Monday 18 January 2010 - 01:21:27 Colin McKee, Jimmy Mills, Josh Thorpe & Bryan Goldsby celebrate another victory! It was a great weekend for the fighters and fans of Port City MMA! Josh Thorpe got things started for the team on Friday night with a big win over XFO welterweight champion Ryan Williams of the Midwest Training Center on a big show in Columbus, GA. Josh used his wrestling skills to defend the takedown and batter his opponent with his boxing skills. He earned the decision in a hard fought battle. The guys kept it going on Saturday night at the UEP show at the Daphne Civic Center. David Wright used his wrestling skills to hit a big throw and pound out a tko stopage in round 1 over an opponent from Pensacola.
Randy James was dominate in winning his pro debut with a rear naked choke in round 1. James dropped his opponent with a hook then jumped on his back to secure the choke.
Jason Knight fought a tough fight in the main event of the evening. He was able to secure a triangle choke in round 2 to pull out the victory against a super tough opponent from Tampa, FL. Great weekend of action and the guys all fought with skill and class. Great job guys! | | |
