Cage Rage 4

TheFightJudge was cage side for the latest Atlas Fight production, Cage Rage 4 at the IP Casino in Biloxi, MS. The show was Saturday June 19th, 2010. The doors to the venue opened promptly at 6pm
and fights started just after 7pm. Concessions consisted of a full wet bar with Miller Lite being the beer sponsor of the night.

The first fight of the night was Chris Hicks vs Curtis Waite at 145lbs.
Seconds after the bell Hicks lands the takedown and transitions into a guillotine. The submission wasn’t there and Hicks moved to rear mount but struggled to land both hooks. The position is lost and Chris Hicks pulls Waite into his guard. Waite moves into half guard but quickly finds himself in an arm triangle. The W goes to Chris Hicks at 1:38 of the 1st round via Arm Triangle

Fight number 2 of the night was Tyrone Brisby vs Blake Singley at 170lbs
This was the best amateur fight of the night. Singley showcased beautiful boxing with both speed and finesse. And Brisby out wrestled Singley at every clinch. This was a ‘Striker’ vs ‘Wrestler’ match if I have ever seen one. Tyrone amassed takedown after takedown against Singley but every time the fighters went to their feet, Singley punished Brisby with dead-accurate punches that seemed to hurt even the crowd. The fight went this way through the first round. And resumed the same way with the second round. Until Singley (after another Brisby takedown) wall walked the cage, reversed the dominant position on the mat, and gains side control. Finally, Blake fights Brisby into an armbar. Singley takes the WIN at 2:08 in the 2nd round due to armbar

Fight number 3 of the night Tel Faulkner vs Danny Ruiz at 170lbs
The fight started with both fighters trying to find their range. Ruiz then decides to take the fight to his comfort zone (the mat) with a fast takedown. He then moves to side control and rains elbows intot he left ear of Faulkner. The referee intervenes to protect Faulkner and stops the fight. Ruiz is the winner at 1:08 of the 1st round.

Fight 4 Joe Abercrombie vs Randy Webb at 135lbs Begins with Abercrombie the aggressor, he pelts Webb with a combination of strikes then pulls a takedown. Webb moves to the mount and Joe works the guard. Abercrombie finds a triangle but loses the hold. The same submission is found and worked again for an exceedingly long time. Webb then moves to Abercrombie’s back to work an armbar but the Referee stands the pair due to lack of action. On the resume, Joe lands 2 successful takedowns, moves to side control and fights Webb in the corner of the cage till the bell.
Round 2 opens with Webb showing a plan change toward boxing but Joe takes him to the mat again. They stand but not for long as Joe takes Webb to the mat for the last time. This time, Abercrombie finds both hooks, pounds Webb from rear mount, locks in a rear naked choke which Webb refuses to tap from.
The WIN goes to Joe Abercrombie at 2:23 of the second due to rear naked choke

Fight 5 Shawn Hayes vs Randy James at 145lbs
Round 1 begins with Hayes rushing James with strikes. James takes his time to find his range while landing several brutal kicks to the body of Hayes. Hayes again rushes James with awkward combinations, near-brawl like boxing, but this time Hayes connects with James’ button. Randy James falls to the mat and the referee intervenes to stop any unnecessary damage to James as he is unable to protect himself. Hayes goes crazy at the sight of his fallen opponent, seemingly unsure whether to continue fighting, stand or to sit. The win goes to Shawn Hayes at 0:48 sec of the 1st round due to KO

Fight 6 Ryan Caprari vs Kyle Bullock at 160lbs
Round one starts with Caprari in complete control. He lands a single punch, drops Bullock to the mat and proceeds to take his back. He pulls in both hooks while working the rear naked choke. Bullock fights the choke for nearly an entire round but submits by tapping. The win goes to Caprari at 3:38 of the 1st round by way of rear naked choke.

Fight 7 Wesley Little vs Justin Hallahan at 205lbs
The first round begins with a series of powerful strikes by both fighters followed by a clinch. Hallahan is successful in 7 takedowns and seems in control of his opponent. The majority of strikes thrown by Hallahan connect and he pushes Little against the cage wall at will. The fighters end the round on the mount.
As soon as Round 2 is about to begin, Hallahan signals to his corner man, Alan Belcher that he is injured. Belcher urges him to continue, obvious that Hallahan is winning the fight but the injury is seemingly severe and directed at the fighter’s left shoulder
The win goes to Wesley Little at the end of the 1st round due to TKO (injured opponent).

Fight 8 Marcus Andrusia vs Aaron Williams
Andrusia vs Williams served as the Co-Main Event of the night with Andrusia taking the fight with very little notice. The first round opens with a solid head kick from Andrusia , an exchange and a second head kick. Williams does fire back a quick combo that pushes Andrusia away for a moment but Marcus ‘The Boogeyman’ Andrusia keeps moving forward. Upon engaging again, Andrusia lands a 3rd head kick (and a 3rd knockdown for Williams), trailed by a fast 4 punch combination. There is a clinch, Marcus goes for a guillotine, then side mount which transitions to rear mount with both hooks and finishes with a solid rear naked choke. The win goes to Marcus Andrusia at 2:21 of the 1st round via rear naked choke.

Fight 9 Josh Thorpe vs Matt McCook for the “145lb Atlas Title” Round one begins with McCook living up to his nickname ‘Tsunami’ as he rushes Thorpe with a flying kick. Josh Thorpe then settles into a meticulous boxing groove that McCook is unable to defend or attack. Matt lands a head kick, which Josh counters with a forward solo plex kick to regain range. McCook lands a flying knee, a takedown and an armbar attempt. They stand, Josh head kicks, moves McCook to the fence and pounds Matt in the face yet again. McCook is successful with another takedown but ends up on his back with Thorpe in side control. From this position, Thorpe works McCook’s upper body and head, knees him repeatedly in the ribs, moves to North/South position which McCook reverses with an arm triangle that holds till the bell.

Round 2 begins just as tense as round 1 ended. Thorpe owns the stand up game between the fighters with strikes and movement that is both sharp and accurate. Again McCook rushes Thorpe with a useless front kick and Thorpe keeps boxing McCook’s head. Thorpe moves to leg kicks followed by jabs and McCook goes for another takedown. The move works, but puts Matt in a prone, facedown position. Thorpe takes half guard to full guard against the cage wall then proceeds to pound McCook’s ribs again. Matt heel spikes the back of Thorpe’s thighs while Thorpe drops elbows into McCook’s face. The two stand again Josh goes back to boxing and lands a painful abdomen kick to McCook. McCook kicks Thorpe’s right knee and tries to repeat the move but the kick lands in Thorpe’s groin. There is a quick break but at the return Matt throws a head kick which doesn’t find a home. He lands another flying knee to Josh’s face then Thorpe makes a slam of a takedown to McCook. The round ends in the North/South position with Thorpe in control again.

Round 3 begins with an eye gouge from McCook then a break. On the return, Thorpe goes for a leg kick but connects with McCook’s groin and the fighter is given his own break. When action finally continues Matt kicks Thorpe in the same right leg which seems to be causing pain. Thorpe hip tosses McCook but doesn’t follow him to the canvas. McCook keeps after the right leg of Thorpe and Josh keeps boxing. There is a takedown, they stand and box, a clinch with Josh in control. Thorpe gains another takedown and ground and pounds McCook. Matt is able to execute a backdoor escape. They stand and exchange again. Thorpe makes the final takedown of the match and throws one heavy elbow after another into McCook’s face. At this point both fighters are covered in blood, McCook’s blood, from a large gash opened on the fighter’s nose.
The win goes to Josh Thorpe by way of unanimous decision. *We are then informed that McCook’s belt (145lb Atlas champ) was never in danger of being lost to Thorpe. A real surprise to all the fans. Thorpe failed to make weight before the fight, showing 148lbs on the scale instead of the contractually agreed 145lbs. An official rematch has been agreed to by both fighters for August 14th at Cage Rage 5.
